NO Opens the Door to YES

It’s one of my favourite sayings:

No Opens the Door to YES

All week I have been talking with clients and connections, on and offline about that old chestnut, “I’m scared to follow up in case people think I’m a stalker”. I think what they’re really saying is, “I don’t like being rejected.”

Think about it logically. Not everyone is going to like us, right? I mean we can’t be everything to everyone all of the time, can we? So, by that logic, some people are going to say no to us sometimes. It’s just the way the world works. But for many people it doesn’t matter how logical it is, they still don’t like putting themselves in situations where they will be rejected. Which is ok, if they don’t want to sell or promote something to other people. If they do their results are likely to be a pale representation of their desires.

I know from experience that it can take months to get to the bottom of why we don’t like rejection as there are so many factors to consider. For some people it might even take years.

What if there was another way to tackle it?

Adam Ferrier (The Gruen Transfer) shared this week that he believes that we need to move on from the old thinking that behavioural change is created by

Changing
thoughts to create
feelings to influence better
actions.

He said that the key to behavioural change is changing actions first. And I agree. Modelling, Practicing, Pretending, Role Playing, DOING are all examples of action.

Do you have a fear of rejection? Is it stopping you from achieving, selling or influencing others? There are a number of things you can do to succeed and the one I like the most is simple.

  1. Write down the situation you need to place yourself in to get your results.
    For example, if you want a new relationship, where do you need to be to meet people?
    If you want more sales who do you need to call on?
  2. Print the Million Dollar Relationships

  3. Buy some smiley stickers. Or buy a stamp or use a favourite pen.
  4. Check each square off every time you get a NO

At some stage, before you complete the sheet you will get a YES from someone. This is cause to celebrate of course.

Every NO is one step closer to YES in every situation. Go forth, take action and see your results improve.
